Do Animals Take Their Own Lives?

Since one of the things philosophers do is ask questions, I put one forth:

Do animals ever commit suicide?

We’ve all seen the smushed creatures in the road — how many of them died intentionally? Are armadillos angst ridden? Do some creatures see the meaningless in their repetitious existence? Did the chicken cross the road because he was depressed? What would push a squirrel over the edge?

I can’t answer these questions; to do so would mean we would have to become scientists, testing nonhuman animal behavior. Do you think it’s likely, however?
